The Story

A beacon of innovation and collaboration, the 21-storey Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning unites SickKids’ research and education under one roof in Toronto’s Discovery District. The facility features 200,000 sq. ft. of wet and dry lab space, a 50,000 sq. ft. vivarium, and advanced teaching areas, including a 250-seat lecture theatre, with interconnected “science neighbourhoods” fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Designed for sustainability, the tower incorporates rainwater collection, energy-efficient systems, and materials with recycled content, reducing energy use by 38% and diverting over 90% of construction waste. As Canada’s tallest laboratory at the time of completion, it sets a new standard for cutting-edge research infrastructure.
