EllisDon Corporation and Crewscope: A Case Study in Enhanced Productivity

Recognizing the industry-wide challenge of declining labor productivity, PME Inc. and EllisDon partnered with Crewscope to implement a new pilot program aimed at enhancing worker engagement and efficiency.

Addressing the Challenge

The construction sector has grappled with a persistent labor shortage in recent years, leading to increased workloads and a decline in overall efficiency. PME Inc. sought to address this challenge by identifying new methods to motivate and empower its workforce.

Introducing Crewscope

Crewscope, a leading productivity platform, was piloted with our crews working on the Capital Line South LRT Sewer relocation project in Edmonton in March 2023. The program focused on providing real-time feedback, establishing clear performance targets, and recognizing achievements with tangible rewards.

Delivering Measurable Results

The implementation of Crewscope yielded significant improvements across key performance indicators. Based on the data pulled from Crewscope’s project-specific database, EllisDon saw the following results:

• Enhanced Productivity: Labor productivity increased by approximately 8%, translating to substantial cost savings. The team estimated a total of 846 hours saved. Based on a $100 fully burdened labour rate, this represents $84,600 in cost savings.
• Improved Schedule Forecasting: Crews achieved 100% accuracy in predicting project targets.
• Elevated Morale: Workers reported increased job satisfaction and a greater sense of ownership. The crew took initiative to follow up on deliveries to avoid delays and ensure they met their targets.
• Exceptional ROI: The program delivered a tenfold return on investment.

Key Drivers of Success

The pilot program's success stemmed from several key factors:

• Empowerment: Crews were equipped with the tools and information necessary to take ownership of their work and make informed decisions.
• Transparency: Real-time feedback and clear targets fostered a sense of accountability and purpose.
• Recognition: The reward incentives motivated workers to meet their schedule milestones. The program issued $8,530 of rewards to the crew that were redeemed for gift cards through Crewscope.

Expanding the Impact

Following the success of the pilot program, EllisDon has expanded the use of Crewscope to other projects, including the Alberta Legislature Plaza and First Nations Housing Projects. Both EllisDon and Crewscope are committed to leveraging innovative technologies to drive productivity and enhance overall performance within the construction industry.
