EllisDon is pleased to have been named the recipient of the 2026 OGCA Ontario Builder Award for Project Value over $300 million – Buildings. This prestigious recognition highlights its outstanding work at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario and Toronto East Health Network.
“We’re proud of the work that has taken place at Michael Garron Hospital and to be acknowledged by the OGCA amongst our industry peers,” said Andrew Anderson Senior Vice President & Area Manager, Toronto, EllisDon. “What was already set to be a complex project with an impressive scale, then had to be delivered safely through a global pandemic, on a site with an active hospital, and in one of Toronto’s busiest neighbourhoods. This award reflects the team’s immense expertise and spirit in navigating countless moving parts and challenges throughout the successful delivery.”
As a landmark project, the redevelopment has transformed one of Toronto’s most vital community hospitals into a modern campus that will serve East Toronto for generations. As a staple in one of the city’s busiest urban areas, the project enhances the campus’s capacity with the nine‑storey Ken and Marilyn Thomson Centre, four levels of underground parking, extensive campus renovations, and the careful rehabilitation of the original 100‑year‑old hospital building; all of which were delivered through a Design‑Build‑Finance model.
The scale and complexity of construction, the multigenerational nature of the existing campus, and the operational realities of working in an active hospital environment necessitated a coordinated, proactive approach to successfully deliver this facility. Demonstrating EllisDon’s position as an industry leader in healthcare infrastructure, teams overcame unprecedented challenges of COVID‑19, navigated a complex array of nearly 30 sequential renovation phases, implemented rigorous Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) measures, and instituted industry‑leading health and safety practices.
This award demonstrates the adaptability, agile decision making, and perseverance of everyone involved in the MGH redevelopment. The community will now benefit from a facility that strengthens care delivery, enhances patient and staff safety, and future‑proofs critical infrastructure through advanced systems and design. The newly built spaces truly reflect MGH’s place as the Heart of the East, showing the importance of expertly delivered healthcare infrastructure.
