The Story

A transformative urban revitalization project, the Port Lands Flood Protection and Enabling Infrastructure initiative reshapes Toronto’s waterfront by mitigating flood risks and creating vibrant, naturalized spaces. Spanning 400 hectares, the project includes the creation of two new outlets for the Don River, a 1.2 km river valley with a naturalized mouth, wetlands, meadows, and parklands, offering flood protection for 300 hectares of downtown Toronto.

Key infrastructure improvements include the construction of three new bridges, the creation of Villiers Island, realigned roadways, transit rights-of-way, and critical servicing upgrades such as watermains and storm sewers. The Cherry Street Stormwater and Lakefilling Project adds new land for public use, featuring a recreation area, playground, and wetlands, while addressing sediment challenges with innovative dredging solutions.

By integrating sustainable practices like soil reuse, ice management systems, and wildlife-friendly habitats, the project not only protects against flooding but also transforms the Port Lands into a thriving, accessible community hub.
